Cable management is the thing every studio builder says they'll do properly this time, and then doesn't. The result is familiar: a rack that looks great from the front and like a bowl of spaghetti from the back.
This guide is about doing it properly — from planning stage to final tie-down.
Why Cable Management Actually Matters
It's not just aesthetic. Bad cable management causes:
Ground loops and interference — unshielded cables running parallel to power lines pick up hum and noise.
Overheating — tangled cables restrict airflow through the rack.
Damage — sharp bends in cable runs stress the cable internally over time.
Troubleshooting nightmares — when something breaks at 2am before a session, an unorganized cable run is a 45-minute problem. An organized one is 5 minutes.
The Core Principle: Power and Signal Never Touch
Route power cables (IEC, power conditioner feeds, anything carrying AC) and signal cables (XLR, TRS, MIDI, digital) on opposite sides of the rack. Use the left side for one, right side for the other, and never let them cross except at 90 degrees. This is the single most impactful thing you can do for your signal chain's noise floor.
Planning Your Cable Routes Before You Mount Anything
Before a single cable goes in, draw a rough map of your rack layout and note which direction each cable will exit the back of each piece of gear. High-density gear like patch bays and interfaces will have many cables — plan their routes first.

The Right Cables for Rack Builds
Use patch cables that are exactly as long as they need to be, not longer. Extra length creates bundles and tangles.
Right-angle connectors are your friends — they reduce the radius at connection points and keep things close to the rack face.
For longer runs, use individually shielded cables where possible.
Color-code your runs if you have the patience: black for returns, red for sends, blue for digital, etc. You'll thank yourself in a year.
Mounting and Dressing the Cables
Work from the back to the front — route and dress the rear cables before mounting any front-panel connections.
Use velcro cable ties, not zip ties. Velcro is reusable when you need to make changes; zip ties require cutting and replacement.
Leave a service loop — a deliberate small loop of slack cable — at each connection point. This allows the gear to be slid forward in the rack for access without unplugging.
Bundle similar cables together, not all cables together. All XLRs in one bundle, all power in another.
